01Make a door-by-door list
Include the main entrance, any side or rear door and accessible windows that need attention. Record which lock is unreliable and which you simply want changed. This helps distinguish repairs from planned improvements. A lock cylinder can sometimes be replaced while suitable surrounding hardware remains, but compatibility must be checked. For a flat, keep the communal entrance separate from your own front door: the person entitled to approve work may be different.
02Know what the replacement includes
Ask which components are being replaced, how many keys are supplied and how the finished door will operate. If an insurer specifies a requirement, share its exact wording. If retaining existing handles or a particular finish matters, mention that before choosing hardware. Agree the price for the defined work and discuss any change in scope after assessment. A planned visit should leave you clear about the locks being changed and who will receive the new keys.
